Protected program education is via video conference from our three major sites: Ascension St. John Hospital and Ascension St. John Providence Southfield and Park. Starting at 7 a.m., we have resident and attending lectures followed by OITE based questions. Lectures are based on our year long comprehensive curriculum.

Trauma Conference

Resident on our trauma service, Thursday mornings from 7:15 - 8:15 a.m. will attend x-ray conference. Cased from the previous week and upcoming cases are reviewed. Educational discussions are led by our fellowship trained trauma attendings.

General Conference

Residents on our joints and general orthopedic service, Thursday mornings from 7:30 - 8:30 a.m. will attend our case conference where residents present various cases from any service previously attended. The purpose is to discuss various orthopedic pathologies and treatments. This is led by the attending surgeons. We also have joint conference with the radiology residents at Ascension St. John Providence, once per month to review orthopedic imaging.

Anatomy Lab

Resident meet twice a month as a program to study musculoskeletal anatomy. One portion being gross anatomy and the other being surgical approaches. The lab is run by the second year residents who, along with our interns, present the relevant anatomy. Attendings and senior residents add valuable clinical information to the group discussion.

Orthopedic Surgery Educational Confference (COGMET)

Residents are required to attend the monthly COGMET conference hosted by Michigan State University. Well recognized lectures in their respective fields are chosen from around the country to give lectures regarding a particular topic in orthopedics.

Journal Club

Residents engage in bi-monthly journal club didactic to discuss the orthopedic literature. The program work with various orthopedic device companies for residents to provide educational training on products and equipment.

Subspecialty Conferences

Throughout the academic year residents have the opportunity to attend various local subspecialty conferences which serves as a great opportunity to learn from some of the top orthopedic surgeons in their respective fields. It is also a good opportunity to network, meet resident from other programs, and speak with leading researchers.

Arthroscopy Cadaver Labs

Residents of the program have the opportunity to visit the Arthrex facility with cadaver lab capabilities and practice surgical approaches. Our fellowship trained sports surgeons attend and provide valuable education.

AO Trauma - Basic Principles of Fracture Management

The Basic Principles of Fracture Management Courses is designed to provided the participant with a fundamental knowledge of operative treatments of fracture care according to the AO principles. The course will cover the concepts of absolute and relative stability as applied in context of the soft tissue injury for each limb segment's major fracture types. This course will teach the surgeon how to mange trauma and trauma reconstruction.

Depuy Synthes Future Leaders Arthroplasty Course

Our second year residents attend this course and learn the basic of total joint arthroplasty of the hip and knee. Residents participate in the advanced course in their fourth year of residency.
