The Ascension Macomb-Oakland Hospital Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Program is a 72 month (6-year), postdoctoral program fully accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association. We accept 3 residents per year.  

PGY-1:  The first year resident will attend orientation and be on service until medical school begins in the second week of July.  During the first year, residents will work during breaks from medical school.

PGY-2: The second year resident continues their medical school experience dedicating this year to didactic coursework.

PGY-3: The third year resident participates in third year medical school clerkships, consisting of the following: 12 weeks of general surgery, 12 weeks internal medicine,  8 weeks of obstetrics and gynecology, 8 weeks of pediatrics, 4 weeks of family medicine, 4 weeks of neurology and 4 weeks of psychiatry.  The resident will also complete their ER Sub-I, IM Sub-I and Step II Study months during this year.

***No resident stipend is offered during the PGY-2 year and a partial amount of the PGY-3 year.

PGY-4:  The fourth year resident continues their medical school curriculum and is employed.  The resident completes the following rotations during this year:  5 months of anesthesia (2 months - pediatric anesthesia at Children's Hospital of Michigan, 3 months - general anesthesia) and 7 months of OMFS service months.

The resident spends a majority of their time while on the OMFS service in our oral surgery clinic.  In addition, residents are assigned monthly to one of our oral & maxillofacial service lines.   Residents are exposed to in-patient care during the course of their daily assignments, which include pre and post-op rounding of OR cases and participating in after-hour cases on their assigned service.  

PGY-5: The fifth year resident consists of 4 general surgery months, including 1  2-trauma, 2-SICU.  Other resident rotations include: 1 month of neurosurgery, 1 month of head & neck surgery and 7   6 months of general OMFS.

PGY-6: The sixth year resident is the  chief of their OMFS service and assumes primary responsibility for his/her service.
