Since 1972, the Orthopedic Surgery Residency Program at Ascension Macomb-Oakland Hospital has produced some of the best and brightest residents to become outstanding Orthopedic Surgeons. Headed by Dr. Benjamin Best, the program has 100% pass rates on oral, written, and clinical boards resulting in the residents securing their desired fellowships.  Residents receive a well rounded orthopedic education with an emphasis on trauma and joints, however, all subspecialties are represented in our Alumni.  The Orthopedic Surgery Residency Program received initial ACGME accreditation.

Program Director: Benjamin Best, DO

Dr. Best completed his undergraduate training at Michigan State University and the University of Michigan. Dr. Best is a graduate of Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine. Upon graduation, Dr. Best complete his orthopedic Surgery Residency at St. John Providence Health System, now known as Ascension Providence Hospital.  Dr. Best completed an additional fellowship in Trauma Surgery at Wake Forest University-Baptist Health System. Dr. Best is an Orthopedic Trauma Surgeon at Ascension St. John Hospital and Medical Center, a level 1 trauma center.

Assistant Program Director & Chair of Orthopedic Surgery: Alan Afsari, MD

Dr. Afsari completed his undergraduate training at the University of Michigan and completed medical school at the American University of the Caribbean, School of Medicine. Dr. Afsari, completed his Orthopedic Surgery Residency Training at Wayne State University and Fellowship in Orthopedic Trauma at the Florida Orthopedic Institute under the direction of Dr. Roy Sanders. In addition, Dr. Afsari complete additional training as an AO/ASIF international fellow studying complex hip and pelvis reconstruction/reservation at Inselspital, University Hospital in Bern, Switzerland.
