PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency Program

Residency Purpose

PGY1 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education, and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies.

Residency Mission

The Pharmacy Residency Program at Ascension SE Wisconsin Hospital - St. Joseph Campus aims to develop pharmacists who are competent, confident and compassionate practitioners. They will function as effective members of the health care team with the ultimate goal of providing optimal pharmaceutical care to patients. These pharmacists will possess the knowledge and experience required to be proficient in appropriate medication use. They will develop and practice effective written and verbal communication skills and become valuable educators of health care professionals, patients, students, and the community. Residency graduates will demonstrate time management and independent thinking skills that will make them leaders within their practice settings and within the profession.

Expectations to be completed during the residency year:

  • Licensure in the state of Wisconsin within 90 days of start date
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Certification
  • Attend leadership and development meetings
  • Resident attendance at every cardiac/respiratory arrest while on site
  • Conduct a year-long project with presentation of findings and a manuscript
  • Serve as a clinical preceptor for IPPE and APPE students

     

Program Structure

Required Rotations

  • Orientation (5 weeks) - Starts mid-June
  • Emergency Medicine (5 weeks)
  • Internal Medicine (5 weeks)
  • Pharmacy Administration (5 weeks)
  • NICU/Women's Health (5 Weeks)
  • Formulary Management (longitudinal - 8 weeks)
  • Medication Safety (longitudinal - 12 weeks)
  • Year-long/Research Project (longitudinal - 11 months)
  • Pharmacy Practice/Staffing (longitudinal - 11 months)
  • Academic Rotation at Concordia University Wisconsin with teaching certificate (1 semester (~ 12 weeks))

  • Oncology
  • Oncology Management
  • Ambulatory Care Management

Acute Care Electives (5 weeks)

  • Critical Care
  • Critical Care II
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Emergency Medicine II

Staffing Requirement:

Residents will staff every third weekend.  This is subject to change.  Staffing is a mixture of centralized and decentralized shifts.

$55,000
