Goals of the Internal Medicine Residency Program
- Achieve excellence in recruitment by prioritizing a selection of diverse individuals with integrity, dedication, ability to work in teams, and the recognition that the artful practice of medicine consists of the compassionate application of scientific knowledge.
- To provide residents with the requisite skills in the diagnosis and management of medical problems spanning the spectrum of Internal Medicine, emphasizing excellence in clinical skills and high-value, patient-centered, culturally competent care.
- To foster the development of essential intellectual and personal attributes which will facilitate growth and development throughout one’s career which include the ability and commitment to practice evidence based medicine, to critically assess and utilize medical literature, and to use a rigorous intellectual approach to differential diagnosis and patient management.
- To provide a rotational framework to ensure a high level of competency in all areas of Internal Medicine, but still allow for an individualized educational plan for each resident.
- To assure a diverse clinical experience in the outpatient and inpatient settings, where resident learning is a priority and faculty are supported and equipped to help residents’ growth toward becoming an independent practitioner.
- To develop the skills, knowledge and attitudes necessary to achieve competency in the six areas of Core Competency as defined by the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
- To develop the skills, knowledge, and social accountability necessary to recognize the impact of social determinants on health, to mitigate health disparities, to care for patients from vulnerable populations, and to recognize the impact of public policy on health.
- To deliver an innovative curriculum with emphasis on active, simulated and experiential learning environments that position the program to consistently exceed the national average for the ABIM (American Board of Internal Medicine) examination.
- To develop a culture within medical education that promotes and expands upon the mission of the institution. (Ascension Wisconsin).
- To demonstrate compassion for patients in everyday care, towards other members of the healthcare team, and for the community particularly with respect to community service and charity.
- To utilize well-being coaching to encourage residents to maintain lifelong personal habits and self-care that will help them maintain the optimal personal wellness necessary to provide excellent patient care.
- To deliver a robust longitudinal experiential quality improvement and patient safety curriculum.
Rotation Schedule for Internal Medicine Residents
PGY-1
4 blocks of Internal Medicine Service (IMS) at Columbia St Mary’s, (CSM), 1 block of Internal Medicine service night float at CSM, 1 block of Internal Medicine Service at St. Joseph hospital, 1 block of ICU at CSM, 1 block of Cardiology at CSM, 1 clinic ambulatory rotation at Fox Valley clinics, 1 block ER, 2 blocks electives
PGY-2
2 blocks Internal Medicine service at CSM, 1 block IMS night float CSM, 1 block ICU at CSM, 1 block Hospital Medicine at CSM, 1 block clinic ambulatory at Fox Valley clinics, 1 block Cardiology at CSM, 5 blocks elective (Neurology, Nephrology, Infectious diseases, Rheumatology)
PGY-3
2 blocks Internal Medicine service at CSM, 1 block IMS at St Joseph, 2 blocks ICU at CSM, 1 block Hospital Medicine at CSM, 1 block clinic ambulatory at Fox Valley clinics, 5 electives (Geriatrics/ Hospice and Palliative Medicine, Hematology and Medical Oncology, Endocrinology, Pulmonology, Gastroenterology, Addiction Medicine/Psychiatry)
Electives offered in addition to above specialty/sub-specialty rotations: Cardiovascular ICU, Electrophysiology, Electrophysiology/Vascular clinic, Radiology, ER procedures, Pain Management, Obesity Medicine
