Internal Medicine Residency
A Message from our Program Director
Welcome to our Internal Medicine Residency Program!
It is my pleasure to introduce you to our Internal Medicine residency program which has been accredited since 1975. In 2015, we were granted Initial Accreditation by the ACGME without any reservation. We became fully accredited by the ACGME in January of 2018. We were also granted Initial Accreditation status in Osteopathic Recognition in July of 2018. This will allow us to provide our trainees ample opportunities to become well prepared, successful Internists thriving in the continuously changing world of Health Care.
Our inpatient training is done at Ascension Genesys Hospital, a 410-bed institution located in Grand Blanc, Michigan. The hospital offers a wide array of training opportunities. In addition to our core six training programs, we offer a number of ACGME accredited subspecialty fellowship programs. The combination of high academic standards and the individual attention allowed by the size of the program and the hospital makes our program the ultimate place for your training.
The core values of our hospital are: Service of the Poor, Reverence, Integrity, Wisdom, Creativity and Dedication. Our team of IM residents has a great opportunity for hands-on training that is well balanced with great academics. Recognizing the need in today’s health care for primary care, we created and endorsed training opportunities in primary care settings; Residents complete either a conventional Internal Medicine residency or Primary Care emphasis training. In the Primary Care track, residents have a greater choice of rotations, education and patient care in the primary care area. The resident’s continuity clinic, Downtown Health Clinic, is in Flint, Michigan. It is a free-standing training center where residents build their own strong practices while in the program. Our residents enjoy a significant amount of autonomy as they progress through the training. Our IM team graduates are not only excellent care givers but also physician leaders as they participate in quality improvement initiatives, patient safety and practice management throughout their training. Our graduates have been successful in their careers as specialists as well as primary care physicians.
On the personal side, I joined Genesys in 2011 and have been impressed with the high degree of collegiality among our residents from my first day. Here you can see the true meaning of the word ‘team’. Our residents treat each other as they would a family member. They anticipate each other’s needs and frequently offer help. Here they develop friendships that last beyond the training program. The faculty enjoy teaching learners of all levels, and are also “part of the family.”
I have been enjoying teaching and training medical students and residents since 1999. I understand the hardships and high demands that medical schools and training programs require from each and every one of you. My goal is to make sure that you learn the most in the least stressful environment; that you experience (what you always hear about but not always see) well balanced training in Internal Medicine. I treat every resident as my family member, deeply care and help each one of you to succeed to become an exemplary physician.
