About the PGY1/2 HSPAL Residency Program
The PGY1 portion of this combined residency program takes place within Ascension Tennessee Markets, a network composed of 10 hospitals across central Tennessee. The health-system encompasses nearly 2,000 licensed beds and includes a community teaching hospital (Ascension Saint Thomas Midtown), a comprehensive stroke center, two primary stroke centers, an ACEP-accredited Geriatric Emergency Department, a Level III neonatal intensive care unit, a Level II neonatal intensive care unit, two critical access hospitals, and a neighborhood hospital. The goal of this portion of residency is to provide an in-depth clinical experience as the resident rotates throughout three Ascension Tennessee sites: Ascension Saint Thomas- Midtown, West, and Rutherford, located in Nashville and Murfreesboro, TN. Clinical training is tailored to align with each resident's background and special interests. Residents also have the opportunity to pursue a teaching and learning certificate in collaboration with Belmont University College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences or the University of Tennessee.
The PGY2 portion focuses on health-system pharmacy administration and leadership with Ascension Rx offering a corporate environment for innovation and professional development. Residents will have the opportunity to collaborate with healthcare professionals nationwide and engage in a wide range of experiences, from procurement to direct patient care. The residency is based in a corporate setting that influences pharmaceutical care, medication management, and patient outcomes throughout the largest non-profit health system in the United States. Ascension’s care sites include critical access hospitals, large academic medical centers and smaller community clinics.
The program provides residents the opportunity to freely exchange ideas and best practices across facilities, offering residents the chance to work with the hundreds of professionals nationwide, maximizing post-residency career opportunities. The PGY2 year is primarily a virtual setting, with several travel opportunities throughout the year. This structure allows residents to build experience in remote work, which is a model that reflects the future of healthcare leadership while also providing direct access to executive pharmacy leaders across the country, strengthening both leadership skills and professional network.
