Residency Program

Overview

The PGY1 portion of this combined residency program provides an in-depth clinical experience at Ascension Saint Thomas, which consists of a 10-hospital network throughout Middle Tennessee. The health-system comprises nearly 2,000 licensed beds and includes a community teaching hospital (Ascension Saint Thomas Midtown), comprehensive stroke center, two primary stroke centers, An ACEP Accredited Geriatric Emergency Department, one level III neonatal intensive care, one level II neonatal intensive care units, two critical access hospitals, and a neighborhood hospital. Throughout the PGY1 year, the resident will primarily rotate among three Ascension Tennessee sites: Ascension Saint Thomas Rutherford, Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital West, and Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital Midtown. Clinical training is tailored to the resident’s background and special interests. The resident will have the opportunity to collaborate with Belmont College of Pharmacy or the University of Tennessee to pursue a teaching certificate.

The PGY2 portion of the combined program provides opportunities for the resident to be immersed in an extensive and professionally diverse leadership and management experience. The residency is conducted in a corporate environment that impacts pharmaceutical care, medication management and patient care across the largest non-profit health system in the U.S. Ascension sites of care include critical access hospitals, large academic tertiary care institutions and smaller community clinics. Ascension provides residents the opportunity to freely exchange ideas and best practices for the benefit of every patient at every facility while working with the hundreds of professionals across the country, maximizing the resident’s post-residency career opportunities. The PGY2 year will primarily be conducted in a virtual setting, with multiple travel opportunities throughout the year, allowing the resident to gain valuable experience working from home—a model that represents the future of healthcare leadership. This format also provides the unique opportunity to interact with top executive pharmacy leaders across the country, further enhancing the resident's professional network and leadership experience.
