Ascension SE Wisconsin Hospital –
St. Joseph Campus PGY1 Pharmacy
Residency Program

Residency Program Director's Welcome

Welcome to Ascension St. Joseph Campus! Since 1879, the St Joseph Campus has set the highest standards in healthcare, serving Milwaukee and Wisconsin with clinical excellence and compassionate care.  We operate one of Wisconsin’s largest and most experienced birth centers, with more than 350,000 births to date and a nationally acclaimed neonatal intensive care unit. The Ascension St. Joseph Campus is also the largest provider of healthcare to underserved residents of Milwaukee and the surrounding communities. We are wholly committed to providing the best healthcare services to some of the most vulnerable patient populations in Southeastern Wisconsin.

Ascension is the nation’s largest not-for-profit health system and has a network of hospitals in Wisconsin. This connects pharmacy residents at Ascension St. Joseph with projects that have site, state, and national impact.

The Department of Pharmacy is open 24 hours/day, 7 days/week. Decentralized services are provided through unit based pharmacy teams and the main pharmacy. Clinical and distributive services are provided by over 20 full time unit based pharmacists. The department has  academic affiliations with the University of Wisconsin – School of Pharmacy, Midwestern University – School of Pharmacy, Concordia University Wisconsin – School of Pharmacy, and the Medical College of Wisconsin.

The training program at Ascension St. Joseph  provides preceptors who are both challenging and supportive. Most rotations have two to three preceptors, which allows learners to experience different teaching styles and gain exposure to multiple subject matter experts. Residents work alongside pharmacists in both ambulatory and acute care settings. Elective opportunities in clinical and administrative practice areas allow residents to customize the program to their interests. The Department of Pharmacy, in conjunction with the physicians and nursing staff, is committed to delivering a top quality educational experience. Input from the pharmacy resident is welcome and encouraged on a continuous basis.

Residents provide staffing coverage in the Central Pharmacy and also on a medical/surgical unit. This allows residents to develop familiarity with both distributional and clinical responsibilities. Residents are trained to provide pharmacy services for medical emergencies, stroke and trauma alerts, and rapid responses. As a result of these expectations, residents become highly independent and capable pharmacy clinicians.

Residents have the opportunity to participate in a teaching certificate program through Concordia University and are encouraged to co-precept pharmacy students in order to further develop their teaching and mentorship abilities.

The residency year is the most exciting year of your pharmacy career. It is filled with challenges and the steepest, most exhilarating learning curve. Although the year is challenging, it is an experience you will think back fondly as you embark on your career.

Thank you for your interest in our PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program.  I wish you all the best in your search for a residency program that matches your professional goals.
