PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program

Residency Purpose

PGY1 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education, and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies.

Residency Mission

Ascension St. Elizabeth is a community-based hospital residency with a goal to develop pharmacy practitioners who are confident, competent and compassionate. Residents will be given the opportunity to develop their clinical skills during diverse core and elective rotations. Throughout the year, the resident will become confident in making pharmaceutical recommendations and working collaboratively with doctors, nurses and other medical staff. Through the development of written and verbal communication skills, the resident will become a valuable educator of healthcare professionals, patients, students and the community. The residency year at Ascension St. Elizabeth will prepare the resident to practice as a strong clinical pharmacist in a variety of practice areas, or to pursue a PGY2 in a focused area of interest. Residency graduates will demonstrate critical thinking and time management skills that will allow them to become leaders within their chosen practice setting and the profession.

Rotation Schedule

The first six weeks of the residency program will be orientation to the pharmacy and hospital, including an overview of various technologies that are utilized. The resident will participate in six core rotations, three elective rotations, and five longitudinal rotations. Core rotations are three to six weeks in length and elective rotations are four to five weeks in length. The residency program is designed so that residents develop into well-rounded clinical practitioners. On a day-to-day basis, residents will attend multidisciplinary rounds, provide monitoring and dosing services, review patient profiles, contribute to readmission reduction efforts, precept students, and perform distributive functions. Learning experiences can be tailored to each resident’s interests and abilities.
