Ascension St. John Hospital Overview
Ascension St. John Hospital is a 714-bed community hospital uniquely situated at the intersection of Grosse Pointe, Detroit, and Harper Woods. Renowned for clinical excellence and comprehensive, coordinated medical care, Ascension St. John serves as a regional referral center, providing advanced care across a multitude of specialties and subspecialties. Our areas of expertise include cardiology, oncology, neuroscience, minimally invasive and robotic surgery, women's services, and pediatrics.
Our commitment to cancer treatment is exemplified by the Van Elslander Cancer Center. As a designated children’s hospital, we offer extensive pediatric care, supported by our Pediatric Unit, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), and Special Care Nursery.

Our educational infrastructure complies with ACGME requirements for Supervision and Accountability, and we host residents from various programs for selective clinical experiences. We also welcome medical students from Wayne State University School of Medicine and Central Michigan University School of Medicine.
Anesthesia Department
Our anesthesia department boasts 24/7 in-house attending anesthesiologist coverage for all anesthetizing locations, including the OR, L&D suite, and NORA locations. We provide assistance with airway emergencies in the ED and on med/surg floors. A back-up anesthesiologist is available for additional in-house coverage if needed, and board-certified specialists in pediatric, critical care, pain medicine and cardiothoracic anesthesiology are on hand for consultations.
- Residents will benefit from exposure to a high volume and wide variety of cases, including:
- Trauma resuscitation at our Level 1 trauma center
- Cardiovascular surgeries, supported by a 10-bed CVICU
- Advanced interventional cardiology procedures (TAVRs, Watchman, Mitral Clip, Angiovac)
- Robotic thoracic surgeries and video-assisted thoracoscopy
- Comprehensive vascular surgeries
- Neurosurgical procedures, including craniotomies and spine surgeries
- Pediatric surgeries across various specialties
- High-risk OB services
- Surgical oncology procedures
- Diverse general, orthopedic, urologic, and OMFS surgeries
Residents will be trained in modern treatment plans, including ERAS protocols, narcotic-sparing techniques, and regional anesthesia, with deep and diverse experiences in our 20-bed SICU and 20-bed MICU.
Facilities and Resources
Our educational facilities include state-of-the-art classrooms, conference rooms, and an auditorium with up-to-date AV, recording, and conferencing capabilities. The simulation laboratory offers a wide variety of simulators, including neonatal, obstetric, child, and adult models. Our newest addition, the Gaumard Adult Simulator HAL S-5301, is an advanced interdisciplinary patient simulator frequently used for our didactic sessions. Our library, staffed by two full-time librarians, provides extensive research support, and our GME programs are bolstered by a dedicated team of researchers led by a PhD in Biostatistics and Epidemiology.
