Ascension St. John Hospital Rheumatology Fellowship
Welcome
Ascension St. John Hospital now offers a 2 year Rheumatology Fellowship program.
A diverse patient population with a wide variety of rheumatologic disorders, including rare conditions, is available. Ascension St. John Hospital is a 612 bed community hospital servicing a large urban, suburban and rural region. Our rheumatology inpatient consultation service provides exposure to adult and pediatric rheumatology patients admitted with autoimmune diseases, such as vasculitis, systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, temporal arteritis, acute inflammatory arthritis, and other autoimmune and acute inflammatory conditions. The Ascension St. John outpatient rheumatology clinics provide care for patients with chronic rheumatic conditions including rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, scleroderma, polymyositis, temporal arteritis, vasculitis and other chronic musculoskeletal and autoimmune diseases.

Inpatient Rotations
Clinical Rotations are spent at St. John Hospital main campus, with the exception of Pediatric Rheumatology, which is off campus. During inpatient rotations, trainees will be able to work and interact with Internal Medicine residents and residents from other specialties including Podiatry and Family Medicine, as well as medical students, and will be fully supervised by our Faculty.
Ambulatory Care
Continuity clinic experience will be maintained throughout fellowship with three ½ day weekly fellow clinics under direct supervision of our Rheumatology Faculty. In addition to this, out-patient subspecialty clinic experience will be available, such as the weekly Bone and Mineral Clinic in the second year of fellowship. The Pediatric Rheumatology clinic experience will be off campus as an elective in the first and second year.
Research
Fellows will be actively involved in clinical research activities. A mentor from our Faculty team will be assigned to each fellow to work on the development of a research/quality improvement project. During the first year, a research/quality improvement project will be developed and implemented by the fellow under the direct supervision of his/her mentor. During the second year, continued data collection, analysis and ultimately publication of results will be completed. A yearly research presentation by all fellows will allow each trainee to discuss his/her protocol and preliminary results and obtain feedback from the Faculty. It is expected that fellows to present an abstract with their results at a national scientific Rheumatology meeting or a regional scientific meeting.
