Emily Cochard, MD, FACP

Dr. Emily Cochard, MD, FACP is a Pulmonary/Critical Care physician and not only the fellowship director but also serves as the Statewide Medical Director for Ascension St. Vincent Indiana and as an Assistant Director for the Internal Medicine Residency. She provides comprehensive care for pulmonary conditions such as asthma, COPD, alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, sarcoid, interstitial lung disease, lung nodules/cancer, etc. She is competent at bronchoscopic procedures including routine bronchoscopies and endobronchial ultrasound with biopsy. Dr. Cochard is passionate about communication and will share her Vital Talk training with fellows and model effective communication at the bedside. Her interests include ICU curriculum, POCUS, procedural training and effective patient/family communication. Outside of work, Dr. Cochard enjoys spending time with her children, running and a good latte.

 

  

Mark Mastrodicasa, MD

Mark Mastrodicasa, MD is a Pulmonary & Critical Care physician who grew up in Canada before pursuing his medical degree. He serves as Associate Program Director for the PCCM fellowship. Prior to joining the PCCM group at St. Vincent completed his Internal Medicine residency and 4th year chief resident year at Case Western Reserve University MetroHealth in Cleveland, OH.  This was followed by his Pulmonary/Critical Care fellowship at the University of Cincinnati where he completed the Clinician Educator track.  He provides comprehensive care for many pulmonary conditions such as asthma, COPD, alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, sarcoidosis, interstitial lung disease, pulmonary hypertension, lung nodules/cancer, etc.  He is a physician on the St. Vincent Lung Nodule program and performs advanced bronchoscopic procedures such as robotic navigational bronchoscopy with biopsy, endobronchial ultrasound with biopsy and cryobiopsies.  His interests include curriculum development, adult learning, bronchoscopy, and pulmonary physiology.  Outside of work, Dr. Mastrodicasa enjoys spending time with his wife and 4 daughters, fishing and lounging in his backyard pool.

 

Matthew Mitchell, MD

1. Tell us about yourself in a few lines - training, career path, family, interests, etc. 

Dr. Mitchell choose an alternative path on his way to Critical Care. He was an EMT prior to medical school, he chose to do an Emergency Medicine Residency in Detroit at Henry Ford Hospital.  It was there that he fell in love with Critical Care and met a huge mentor to him, Dr. Emanuel Rivers. He then pursued a Critical Care Fellowship at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. He has been with Ascension St. Vincent since 2018 and have been actively involved with the Fellowship since its inception. He is married to a Nurse and has two children. Most of his free time is traveling around the country with my daughter's dance studio. When he is at home, you can usually find him in his home gym or reading the latest Fantasy Novel. 

2. Pulmonary/CC interests? 
Main interest is Palliative care and Resident Education. We also are trying to actively get our team trained on TEEs. 

3. If you weren’t a physician, what would be your dream job? 
If Ninja wasn't available, Probably owning a gym. There is something appealing to him about working out all day.
 
4. What are 3 things you can’t start your day without? Hefinds this to be a trick question as he is not a morning person. He can't start his day without several extra hours of sleep!
 
5. Favorite restaurant? Anything BBQ, but Chick fila is always great.
 
6. Fun fact? I love Cosplay. I currently have Darth Vader, The Mandolorian, Batman, Captain America, and Spiderman! All of which he tries to wear as often as possible.

 

 

  

 

Julio E. Noriega, MD

Dr. Noriegacompleted medical school and internal medicine residency at Indiana University then fellowship at the University of Iowa. He enjoys our mix of outpatient and inpatient practice here at Ascension. Otherwise, he enjoys reading, movies, and spending time with family.

Brent Toney, DO

1. Tell us about yourself in a few lines - training, career path, family, interests. etc.
Dr. Toney is a pulmonary and critical care physician with St. Vincent, starting in 2012.  He graduated in the top 3% of his class at Nova Southeastern in 2005.  As a pulmonary fellow, he was elected chief fellow at IU his third year and his research on pulmonary hypertension was awarded the top research project by a fellow in all specialties in 2012.  He is a strong patient advocate and enjoys his dual role as an intensive care physician and outpatient pulmonary physician. He loves teaching the next generation of medical students, residents and fellows with his association with Marion College of Osteopathic Medicine and Indiana University School of Medicine.
 
He is originally from Terre Haute IN, still returning to visit family and friends a number of times a year.  He is an avid outdoorsman, always planning the next trip to enjoy our beautiful country with his wife and 4 sons. Thankfully they are used to his 11 mile hikes.  
 
2. Pulmonary /CC interests? Asthma, Interstitial lung disease, COPD, Sarcoidosis, lung nodules, pulmonary fibrosis.
 
3. If you weren't a physician, what would be your dream job? I would be a professional footballer (soccer).
 
4. Three things I start the day?  Work out, newspaper, cereal.
 
5. Favorite restaurant? Long's donuts- good for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
 
6. Fun fact? His record for solving a Rubix cube is currently 80 seconds, he is willing to get pointers to bring it down.

 

Shahryar Ahmad, MD

I am originally from Pakistan. I completed my residency in Chicago and fellowship in Milwaukee and decided to call the midwest home. I like to explore outdoors, ride my bicycle and read fiction.

 For work my interests include process/system improvement around care delivery in hospitals, patient safety and advancing the very important work of decreasing harm for hospitalized patients.

Ryan Schroeder, MD

Dr. Schroeder grew up in Iowa and trained throughout the Midwest before settling in Indianapolis with his wife.

He enjoys the diversity of the specialty from outpatient asthma to ICU care.

 Harin Patel, MD

1. Tell us about yourself in a few lines - training, career path, family, interests, etc.
Dr. Patel was born and raised in the suburbs of NYC, studied Latin at the University of Michigan followed by Molecular Epidemiology at Columbia. He then spent several years doing bench research in an immunology lab then pivoted to medical school at Boston University. He did his internal medicine training at Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, MA and then pulmonary & critical care fellowship at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit.  His wife and two children have accompanied him on this journey. In his free time, they enjoy a wide range of activities including playing board games, reading on their Kindles, hiking, and traveling.
 
2. Pulmonary/CC interests? Pulmonary hypertension, Management of acute PE, Medical education
 
3. If you weren’t a physician, what would be your dream job? Running a café in a charming European town that gets picked to be the filming site for a Hallmark movie.
 
4. What are 3 things you can’t start your day without? His wife telling me my alarm is going off, coffee, hugs from the kiddos

Vrushank Patel, MD

1. Tell us about yourself in a few lines - training, career path, family, interests, etc.

Dr. PatelStarted my medical journey being an internal medicine resident at St. Vincent then proceeded with my Pulm/CC fellowship at Indiana University. Came back to St. Vincent in December 2020 to help build the Lung Nodule Clinic and Interventional Pulmonary programs. Married to my beautiful wife and have one amazing daughter. I use most of my free time training for my various athletic endeavors. Currently in the midst of training for an Ironman.

2. Pulmonary/CC interests? Interventional Pulmonary, Lung cancer, bronchoscopic and pleural procedures

3. If you weren’t a physician, what would be your dream job? Professional athlete

4. What are 3 things you can’t start your day without? Working out, coffee, breakfast

6. Fun fact? Won the Indiana Medical jeopardy team competition all three years I was a resident at St. Vincent. We lost really badly at Nationals each time! Never stood a chance

 

 

 

 

 

Steve Gannon, MD

1. Tell us about yourself in a few lines - training, career path, family, interests, etc. 

Dr. Gannon grew up in Michigan with a family full of doctors so he was always interested in medicine. Completed undergraduate at University of Michigan (Go Blue!) majoring in physics. Stayed in Michigan for medical school at Wayne State University in Detroit. He moved south to complete IM residency at University of Cincinnati. He then moved further south to Texas for his fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine at Baylor University medical center. His family and him moved back to the midwest to Indianapolis to be closer to family and to escape the oppressive summer heat in TX (although I do miss the barbecue and tacos). Here his wife (an ER doctor at IU) and him spend most of their free time raising our family; we have 3 boys (1, 3 and 5 years old) and 3 dogs (Aussies).

2. Pulmonary/CC interests? 
Academically, he is currently enjoying practicing in the critical care environment. While he enjoys pulmonary medicine the ICU remains my passion. He especially is  interested in pulmonary hypertension as well as management of acute PE. He enjoys resident and fellow education and is looking towards improving our simulation education curriculum.

 

3. If you weren’t a physician, what would be your dream job? Hewould be a physicist as that was his passion before medicine.

4. What are 3 things you can’t start your day without? 
Coffee, word puzzles and hugs from his kids
