Thomas Kang, MD
Program Director

Dr. Kang was born in Louisiana and was raised by his parents who were both family medicine doctors. He graduated from the Louisiana State University School of Medicine in 2007 and then completed a General Surgery Residency at Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans, Louisiana. Before medical school, he graduated from Louisiana State University, summa cum laude with a Bachelor's Degree in music.

Dr. Kang has been practicing General Surgery for more than 10 years and was recognized in magazine's Top Doctors Guide in 2021. He joined Ascension Saint Agnes in 2017 and is the Medical Director of Ascension Saint Agnes Maryland Surgeons.

When not working in the operating room, hospital, or clinic, Dr. Kang enjoys reading, watching movies and playing classical music with his wife and daughter. He has always had a passion for teaching, and has received the appreciation award by the Saint Agnes General Surgery residents multiple times. He is honored to serve as  Program Director of the General Surgery Residency at Ascension Saint Agnes, and is looking forward to mentoring young surgeons as they begin their careers.

Isam Hamdallah, MD
Associate Program Director

Dr. Isam Hamdallah earned his medical degree at the Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST) School of Medicine in 2000. A native of Amman, Jordan, he continued his education and training as a surgical resident in various rotations in the United Kingdom before completing a general surgery residency at Saint Agnes Hospital in 2010, when he was named General Surgery Chief Resident. Dr. Hamdallah received fellowship training in Minimally Invasive and Bariatric surgery at the University of California, Davis, in 2011. He is board-certified by the American Board of Surgery as well as the Jordan Board of Surgery, and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh, UK, and the General Medical Council of London, UK. Dr. Hamdallah has been practicing as a bariatric, minimally invasive, and general surgeon in Baltimore since 2011, performing a variety of minimally invasive procedures, including lap hernia repairs, reflux surgeries, and bariatric procedures. He is also active as a clinical educator, teaching surgical residents at Saint Agnes, and previously instructed Howard University residents at Northwest Hospital.

Michael Zatina, MD
Interim Chairman

Dr. Michael Zatina received his medical degree from the University of Michigan. He completed a residency in surgery at the University of Chicago and a vascular fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Zatina has worked at Saint Agnes since 1992. He previously served as chairman of the Department of Surgery and director of the Surgical Residency Program. Dr. Zatina has always enjoyed helping surgical trainees develop into surgical leaders. In his spare time, he enjoys being with his wife of almost 30 years, Katie, and their daughters Kristen, Jennifer and Caroline.

Shirali T. Patel, MD
Section Chief , General Surgery

Dr. Patel specializes in pancreatic and hepatobiliary surgery. She is board-certified in general surgery. She did two fellowships, one in vascular surgery at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan and the second pancreatic and hepatobiliary surgery at Methodist Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. Dr. Patel and Dr. Cunningham work together as a team to offer world-class, multidisciplinary, thoughtful, personalized evaluation and treatment of a broad spectrum of pancreatic, biliary and liver diseases, both benign (noncancerous) and malignant (cancer surgery). She is also a leader at Saint Agnes Hospital in minimally invasive surgery and hernia surgery. She has been a practicing surgeon since 2014. Dr. Patel graduated from Saint George's University School of Medicine in 2006. She then went on to do a general surgery residency at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey. Before medicine, she earned a BS in physiological science from UCLA. After graduating, she served as a medical volunteer in Ghana, Africa and upon her return to the States she worked as an EMT prior to starting medical school.When not in the office, hospital, or operating room, she enjoys traveling. She likes to stay active with snowboarding and hiking, and to relax with a good movie.
