Letter from the Director

Dear Applicant,

Welcome to our Internal Medicine Training Program site! Thank you for your interest in our residency. I strongly believe in providing an active, rigorous and fun learning environment, where residents receive personal support, top educational resources and didactic as well as bedside teaching necessary to become the best clinicians they can be. There is emphasis on learning clinical diagnostic reasoning and problem solving, while incorporating the three tenets of practicing evidence-based medicine: best clinical research, patient preference and sound clinical judgment/expertise. An experienced, highly competent and devoted faculty provide a comprehensive competency based curriculum in internal medicine and subspecialties.

The faculty and I believe in ensuring that residents have the autonomy in patient care essential to development of their clinical skills, yet have the close faculty supervision and support that they need. In addition, our curriculum is constantly updated to not just enforce a foundation of clinical skills and medical knowledge, but to also incorporate learning of professionalism, medical ethics, business of healthcare, patient safety, quality improvement, evidence-based medicine and high value cost conscious care. In addition, we have a simulation curriculum with multidisciplinary teams as well as emphasis on learning procedural skills and acquiring expertise for residents interested in such pursuits.

When you come to our residency, you become part of our Ascension Saint Agnes family. This means that we recognize that you learn best in a non-punitive, supportive environment with the highest standards of collegiality, professionalism and accountability. We also recognize that you have lives outside of medicine and assist, support and mentor you to continue to perform at the highest levels of your ability. We also get together (with significant others and family) several times a year outside of the clinical environment to interact socially through games like volleyball, soccer/cricket, bowling as well as social events like holiday parties, picnics and other activities.

Our residency has teaching affiliation with Johns Hopkins Hospital and residents have opportunities to do elective and research at both Ascension Saint Agnes and at University of Maryland and Johns Hopkins. In addition to patient care, house staff are actively involved in the teaching of medical students as well as research based on their areas of interest. The annual state-wide American College of Physicians Associates meeting is held at Ascension Saint Agnes every year where our program is well represented in the clinical vignettes, research posters and oral competitions.

I invite you to explore the rest of our website. I look forward to meeting you and welcoming you to the exciting and defining next phase of your professional career.
