Ascension Saint Agnes

Our Surgical Residency Program

The Ascension Saint Agnes Hospital general surgery residency is a five-year program, fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education through its Residency Review Committee in Surgery. This academically-oriented, community-based, university-affiliated residency program is the second oldest surgical residency in the country. Residents are offered a broad-based surgical experience to general surgery and many surgical specialties.

The department has an active program in basic, advanced and robotic minimally invasive surgery. Ascension Saint Agnes Hospital has centers of excellence in oncology, orthopedic surgery, and bariatric surgery. Surgical residents will receive extensive experience in managing the critically ill surgical patient. The program also features rotations in burn management, trauma, transplant, gastrointestinal endoscopy, vascular surgery, robotic surgery, pediatric surgery and plastic & reconstructive surgery.

The educational experience at Ascension Saint Agnes Hospital is complemented by rotations at the University of Maryland, Johns Hopkins Hospital and the Children’s National Medical Center.

Training

The surgical residency training program at Ascension Saint Agnes Hospital provides outstanding opportunities for personal growth and incremental responsibility. There is intense involvement in the preoperative, operative and postoperative care of routine cases that one will see the most in surgical practice, as well as more challenging cases. The training allows for very broad, balanced exposure to general surgery and various specialties. Resident teams are exposed to the operating room, emergency department, offices, clinics and critical care areas for the duration of the program.

Residents grow in their leadership and teaching responsibilities as they progress and receive the mentorship and didactic training required to nurture these skills. In addition, they are exposed to a total number of surgical cases that far exceeds the requirements for accreditation and board certification.
