Centering Pregnancy
CenteringPregnancy care is beneficial for patients, especially those in at risk populations. CenteringPregnancy has been shown to decrease preterm birth rates and to decrease healthcare disparities. CenteringPregnancy patients also are more likely to achieve the recommended number of prenatal visits, return for a postpartum visit, and rate their satisfaction with care higher than women receiving traditional prenatal care.
Our program is unique because it integrates CenteringPregnancy care with a residency clinic site. This is a benefit for our resident trainees, who gain valuable experience in the Centering model of prenatal care. All of our PGY-2 OB/GYN residents complete CenteringPregnancy Basic Facilitator training and have Centering as a part of their continuity clinic for a full academic year. Centering has also provided an opportunity for experience in collaboration, with Family Medicine residents and faculty working with those from OB/GYN, and nurse practitioners working with residents as well. We have also been able to implement a Spanish-speaking group, to better serve our diverse patient population.
We began our CenteringPregnancy program in 2017 with grant funding from the St. Vincent Foundation and Indiana March of Dimes. Our implementation process was driven by a Steering Committee including input from our operations staff, physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, residents and social work.
he Joshua Max Simon Primary Care Center is a CHI accredited CenteringPregnancy site. Recently we have also begun planning for CenteringParenting, a similar program providing well child care to mother-baby dyads. We are excited to have Centering care as an integral part of our future in healthcare delivery and graduate medical education!
