Explore Indianapolis

Residency life, an ever evolving adventure, is stressful. While our #1 goal is to provide a solid foundation and education for our residents, we recognize that one of the most important aspects of Residency life is social connection. Together, we promote this by offering both faculty/professional mentoring and peer to peer programs as well as working social time and wellness activities into our schedules. We also embrace "all things Indy" and do all that we can to experience all that our great state and city has to offer. Indianapolis is the capital of Indiana, and the 16th largest city in the US, 3rd largest city in the Midwest after Chicago and Columbus. There is something here for everyone.

Weather

Indiana has all four seasons. Residents enjoy summer pool days, food and beer festivals, and farmers markets around the city. The fall foliage is best enjoyed at our many parks and trails. Winters are mild compared to other midwestern cities with the occasional snow. If you are a skier, there are small mountains that are within driving distance and even direct flights to Denver. Spring does bring some thunderstorms that are much needed for our resident gardeners.

Indianapolis Neighborhoods

Our residents live in various neighborhoods around Indianapolis and its surrounding suburbs, including:

  • Downtown Indianapolis

  • Broad Ripple

  • Carmel

  • Westfield

  • Zionsville

All of these neighborhoods are less than a 30 minute commute to the hospital and have their own character, so you can find what lifestyle fits you the best. About half of our residents rent and half have purchased their homes.

Sporting Events

Indianapolis is home to many professional sports teams, including the Indianapolis Colts, Pacers, Fever and Indy Eleven. We also have a minor league baseball team, the Indians, and hockey team, Fuel. Of course we can’t forget the largest racing event in the US, the Indianapolis 500. Indianapolis is home to the NCAA Head Quarters and often hosts NCAA Championships, and most recently hosted the US Olympic Swimming trials in 2024. Residents also enjoy college sporting events at Butler University, Indiana University, and Purdue University. Whatever your preferred sport is, there is something here for everyone.

Food & Drink

During our free time, we love to explore new restaurants, breweries and bars. Indianapolis is home to a diverse food scene. A great way to try new restaurants for a great deal is during Devour Indy (www.devourindy.com). Some of our resident favorites include:

Outdoor Activities

To replenish our low vitamin D, many of us love to spend our time outdoors on the weekends. Eagle Creek and Fort Harrison State Park have many beautiful hiking trails that are dog friendly. Try biking or running on the Monon Trail that extends up and down the entire city. With a short drive, you can also go camping at Brown County, boating on Lake Monroe or Geist Reservoir. The White River offers tubing during the summer months which is a resident favorite. Every Saturday there are Farmers Markets at Carmel, Broad Ripple, and Zionsville where you can enjoy local farm fresh produce. If you have children or plan to have children, we love our little honorary residents! The Indianapolis Zoo is open year round, and there are many free splash pads and playgrounds throughout the city.
