Mission and Goals

The St. Vincent Hospital Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency, including the faculty, attending staff and residents strive to:


  • Provide for and have the residents obtain an excellent didactic and practical experience in all aspects of obstetrics and gynecology to prepare them to serve as clinicians and consultants for the specialty. Instill and develop a lifetime attitude in the residents toward the value and necessity of learning. Develop an appreciation of the patient as a human being with other attributes not related to a physician/patient relationship.
  • Prepare the residents for certification through successful completion of the basic written and oral examinations administered by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
  • The residents are expected to devote their time and energies to the acquisition of this knowledge and development of these skills. The teaching physicians, both attending staff and full-time faculty, are expected to provide the time, attention, guidance, and explanations to achieve these goals. These goals are desirable to provide not only excellent health care for women, but to insure longevity of this excellence for future generations.

Learning Objectives & Curriculum

The St. Vincent OB-GYN curriculum is designed to be competency-based and PGY specific.

PGY-1:  Experiences are considered intern level. Learning responsibilities are focused on a rapid expansion to the resident’s fund of knowledge, as well as exposure to the arena of primary care.

PGY-2 and PGY-3:  Experiences are more developmental in nature, with a growing knowledge-base expanded by application of this knowledge and an understanding of the mechanisms of our hospital and medical systems.

PGY-4:  Residents are considered to be junior faculty, with teaching and supervisory responsibilities.

St. Vincent’s residency program in obstetrics and gynecology is an academically rigorous training program, balancing the supportive atmosphere of a community program with the opportunities afforded by a single, large quaternary care center. Subspecialty experience is extensive, with the residents gaining significant exposure to gynecologic oncology, urogynecology, endocrinology/infertility, and maternal fetal medicine (the St. Vincent NICU, at 97 beds, is the largest single unit in the state of Indiana).

Residents learn and practice in a supportive environment, allowing them to develop to their fullest potential. St. Vincent’s core values of Service To the Poor, Reverence, Integrity, Wisdom, Creativity and Dedication are all actively demonstrated within the program, through the residents’ interactions with faculty staff, patients, support staff and fellow resident colleagues.
