Culture at St. Vincent

STRENGTHS OF THE PROGRAM:

  • The learning environment and emphasis on wellbeing:  people here really care! They are kind, supportive and encouraging. They really challenge you to work hard and learn and grow while also trying to maintain a good balance in your home life. They recognize that to take the best care of our patients we must also practice self-care. The IM program has a wellbeing committee that is resident led with faculty support - TYs are regularly a part of this committee and participate in these events.

  • Relationship with the Internal Medicine residency program: as the TY program's sponsoring program on campus, we spend a lot of time with these folks. They bring our TYs into the family as if they are one of their own and really make for a wonderful year where friendships and great learning/fun is had.

  • Diversity of electives: there's really an option available for everyone depending on their interests. If you want to do things focused in your future field, you have plenty of options to choose from. Dr. Solik is also very open to molding an experience to fit your needs i.e. going into Rad Onc and want some time in the ENT office so you can learn more about head and neck tumors.

  • Opportunities for procedures: no matter your future field you can find opportunities to explore and develop your hands-on skills - particularly for those going into Anesthesia and Radiology.

  • Opportunities to participate in research and scholarly activity: Ascension St. Vincent has a full IRB and research scientist who can help support your research endeavors. There are always active studies going on that you can participate in as well as quality improvement projects depending on your interest and future goals.

RESIDENT COMMENTS FROM THE CLASS OF 2022 - 2023:

"I'm thankful to have trained during my transitional year here.  The clinical training has been exceptional, surpassed only by the environment created by my co-residents, faculty, and program leadership.  Many of the attendings clearly love to work with residents and their ability to be teachers as well as clinicians is invaluable to us.  This is not a "chill" TY.  It is a busy year, busier than many transitional years, which created some tough moments during the year.  The program is receptive to feedback the residents give and is constantly trying to make improvements and give us a better experience.  Overall I feel that the clinical training and level of support residents receive through this program make them into better physicians, colleagues, and human beings."

"I will surely miss everyone, the experience I had here will surely be missed and I would choose St. Vincent's over and over again for my TY year hands down."

"I truly loved this program.  It is a hard program but I always felt supported.  Katy and Dr. Solik are truly incredible when it comes to supporting this program.  I knew they cared and I never felt undervalued.  I'll miss you both!"
