Application Process
ERAS Application
All applications to the Transitional Year (TY) residency program are received through the web-based Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).
Interviews are by invitation only and are generally offered to applicants with a combination of solid medical school performance, above average step scores, recent clinical experience in U.S. hospitals in which the student or physician had meaningful responsibility for patient management decisions, and strong letters of support from clinical supervisors. Because of the competitive nature of our program, applicants with ties to the state of Indiana and/or specifically interested in our training program should specify that in their personal statement. Applications will be holistically reviewed beginning in November. We blind pictures/self-identification/birthdate/etc. to minimize implicit bias and focus on reviewing the applicant's resume with a focus on how this individual aligns with our programs’ mission & values and their expected ability to be successful in our program based on their clinical performance and letters of recommendation
Interview Season
We will continue to conduct virtual interviews for our residency program's recruitment season. Furthermore, Transitional Year applicants - new for recruitment cycle 24-25 - are able to send 'program signals' as is often observed in some of the specialty training programs. TY applicants are afforded 12 signals total. That being said, we will continue to strive to thoroughly and holistically review all applicants. However, due to the high volume of applications, we are unlikely to extend interview offers to applicants who do not signal our program. Interested applicants are also advised to send a signal to us even if they have rotated here in any capacity. Please contact our Program Coordinator, Katy Wenzel katherine.wenzel@ascension.org, with any questions.
A Special Note for International Medical Graduates
Applications to our Transitional Year (TY) Residency Program are accepted only through ERAS and positions are filled solely through the National Resident Match Program (NRMP). Our goal is to match the best people into our Residency program - no matter if they are IMG’s or USMG’s. Both IMGs and USMGs are presently in residency programs throughout our hospital.
If you match at St. Vincent the policy of the Medical Education Department is to consider the Visa of your choice, provided that there is time to acquire this Visa and that you have the proper credentials. We are very much in favor of the J1 Visa because it is much less expensive and requires less paperwork and time.
We prefer medical school graduation dates within the past year and that are certified under the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG). Exceptions to this are possible, provided that there has been experience, practice, and documentation of continuing medical education since graduation.
US clinical experience is not required for application to our programs. However, it does enhance the quality of your application and provides you with a better chance of being selected for an interview.
We do not provide observerships before the Match. If you match into our program, there is a possibility of an observership or externship after the match and before residency in order to assist you with orientation to our hospital.
