Diversity, Equity and Inclusivity
Diversity, Equity and Inclusivity is at the core of our health care system and residency program. Over the past several years, we have done much work in creating a curriculum about DEI as well as efforts to improve our process in proactively addressing issues. We start with recruitment. Our faculty all undergo training to learn more about unconscious bias and to identify it in themselves. In addition, faculty only receive the applicant's personal statement, in order to limit bias in our interviewers. Once our residents come to us, they are introduced to a robust curriculum that includes didactics and special DEI Grand Rounds, teaching on rotations on subjects such as how to best use interpreters, regular dissemination of articles dealing with DEI issues, discussion about specific marginalized populations at monthly resident business meetings, and a DEI week during which our residents are able to focus their learning in a fun and interactive week. Of course, the best teachers are our patients who come from many different backgrounds to get their care at PMCH. Our Primary Care Center cares for a primarily uninsured/underinsured patient population that includes immigrants from all over the world with languages including Spanish, Haitian-Creole, and Kinyarwanda to name a few. We work diligently to ensure we are preparing our residents to be both culturally competent and knowledgeable.
