Program Overview
The Ascension St. Vincent Indianapolis General Surgery Residency
community or academic practices and who will deliver the highest level of skilled, compassionate care to their patients. The program enrolled its first residents in 2012 and graduated its first Chiefs in June 2015. We focus on a close teaching relationship between faculty and residents. All of our positions are 5-year categorical positions. There are no preliminary positions at present.
Call schedule:
Approximately one in five nights in-house for PGY-1 through PGY-5.
General Surgery Residency Faculty:
Our faculty includes approximately 20 full-time general, colorectal and pediatric surgeons, with an additional 10 faculty who specialize in breast, transplant, thoracic and vascular surgery.
Rotations:
Ascension St. Vincent Indianapolis campus; Ascension St. Vincent Indianapolis Hospital; and Peyton Manning Children's Hospital at Ascension St. Vincent Indianapolis. Additionally, off-campus elective rotations are allowed for our PGY-3s at various U.S. academic institutions that accept our residents and allow them a unique, educational opportunity.
Ascension St. Vincent is a primary teaching hospital of Indiana University School of Medicine, Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine, and Meharry Medical School. We welcome their 3rd and 4th-year medical students for surgical rotations. Overall, there are approximately 170 residents and fellows at Ascension St. Vincent across all disciplines.
Ascension St. Vincent is a primary teaching hospital of Indiana University School of Medicine, Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine, and Meharry Medical School. Didactics and Morbidity & Mortality Case Conference Sessions:
Weekly participation is mandatory (unless the resident is on an away rotation or on vacation).
Other Highlights
Ascension St. Vincent Indianapolis is a Level I Trauma Center. There is a weekly Surgery Clinic at the Joshua Max Simon Primary Care Center. Residents also see patients in private offices with the faculty.
Currently, our program does not have a research requirement; however, all residents are strongly encouraged to participate in one or more of the many research projects available. Our program also supports residents by offering financial assistance for conference registration fees and travel-related expenses when a resident is presenting research at a medical meeting.

The Ascension St. Vincent Surgical Residency program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
