Program Director’s Welcome
Established in 1971, the St. Vincent Family Medicine Residency Program has a long tradition of training first-rate Family Physicians. Our physicians provide phenomenal care to their patients in a stimulating academic setting.
We are a mission focused program in the tradition of Ascension Health, the largest Catholic health system in the country. We train physicians to provide health care that is safe, effective, and available to all. Ascension’s Core Values of Service of the Poor, Reverence, Integrity, Wisdom, Creativity, and Dedication guide us in all that we do in our training program.
The Program provides outstanding depth in multiple areas of training. Our residents score above the national average on In Training Exams and the American Board of Family Medicine Certifying exam. We also strike the necessary balance between personal and professional lives with resident retreats and gatherings in faculty homes. We seek to provide a challenging academic program in a relaxed, family friendly environment.
Our residents enjoy a congenial academic environment with colleagues in Internal Medicine, OB/GYN, Pediatrics, as well as Transitional Year, General Surgery and Podiatry residencies. We are home to a well-established Geriatrics Fellowship. Our excellent relationship with the other St. Vincent residencies and fellowships provide Family Medicine residents with a broad number of rotation experiences and learning and didactic opportunities. Our residency’s goal is to give interns a robust core knowledge in Adult, Child and Pregnancy Care and then personalize training in the 2nd and 3rd year of residency for each resident. We tailor a program that meets each resident’s personal preference for procedural proficiency or specialized experience in Obstetrics, Geriatrics, Global Health, Pediatrics and Underserved Care.
We emphasize the development of leadership skills and teamwork to enable our resident physicians to practice top-notch quality medicine while enhancing the health of the community we serve. Our community involvement includes sports physicals in local schools, providing side-line coverage to local high school sports teams, volunteering in the community and at St. Vincent House and hosting health fairs in the Primary Care Center and the local community.
We are fortunate to have a large patient base, which gives our residents the opportunity to train in all areas of Family Medicine. Our Family Medicine Center provides a vital facility in which to care for our patients and educate residents and students. Our three Indianapolis campus hospitals care for patients with all types of diagnosis, from low to very high complexity and give residents exposure to adults, newborns and children, and maternity care. One of the most exciting additions to St. Vincent is the Simulation Center which opened in 2018. The simulation center allows residents to learn procedures and patient management skills using high fidelity trainers and simulators.
Our graduates enter a variety of practice types, and we have a successful history of matching residents into fellowship programs. Many residents practice in outpatient settings with some additionally providing hospital and OB care. Additionally, we have former graduates practicing academic medicine, urgent care, emergency room care, hospitalist careers, information technology and palliative care.
We are an exceptionally strong residency and we recruit students who are focused on academic excellence, high quality and safe patient care and who want to train in a professional and inquisitive environment. Our Ascension Core Values show with our residency’s Care for the Poor, Creative Educators, Dedication to Quality, Reverence to Life, Personal Integrity which is role-modeled and learned and the Wisdom of Family Medicine.
I invite you to explore why you should join the family of St. Vincent Family Medicine in Indianapolis!
