  • Research

Electives are available in a variety of other areas and are tailored to meet the need of the individual fellow.

Orthopedic experience

Our fellows spend a significant amount of time with some of the finest sports orthopedists in the area. Community and university-based physicians round out the experience for our fellows. They spend time in the OR and the office. Many of our orthopedic physicians are also physicians for professional teams here in Chicago.

Sports medicine center

Ascension Resurrection Sports Medicine Chicago is a twice-weekly clinic, overseen by sports medicine faculty, where athletes are evaluated and treated for sports-related injuries and illnesses. Sports orthopedists, physical therapists with sports medicine training, exercise physiologists and clinical nutritionists are also involved in the care of these athletes. Located within Ascension Resurrection, access to plain film, MRI and cardiopulmonary testing is all steps away.

High school team physicians

The fellowship program has affiliations with several area high schools; among them are St. Patrick High School, Resurrection High School, Ridgewood High School, Maine South High School, and Leyden Township High Schools. Each Fellow is responsible for weekly training room rounds and game coverage at their designated school, and assists in cross-coverage for the others.

Collegiate team physician (North Park University)

North Park University, a NCAA Division III University with 16 sports and an entry-level masters athletic training program, provides a unique training environment that allows our Fellows the opportunity to not only provide primary coverage for games and training room rounds but to also assist in teaching future athletic trainers.

Mass participation events

Fellows will have numerous opportunities to cover and assist in planning a variety of events. In previous years, this has included: the Bank of America Chicago Marathon & Shamrock Shuffle, the CARA Lakefront 10 Miler & Ready to Run 20 miler, the Ken Kraft Midlands Wrestling Championships, Skate America competitions, and the BikeMS Tour de Farms 2 day cycling event.

Additional educational opportunities

Fellows take part in a weekly primary care sports medicine didactic series as well as a monthly journal club held in conjunction with our sports orthopedists. Unique lectures and workshops include topics such as bike fittings, gait analysis, SCUBA medicine, preseason conditioning programs and exercise prescription. A Sports Medicine/Radiology/Orthopedics Grand Rounds is held every two months. Fellows also assist with providing sports medicine lectures/workshops to both the family medicine and emergency medicine residents.

Fellows are involved in the planning and presenting at Ascension Resurrection's yearly sports medicine symposium that is sponsored by the fellowship program each spring.

Each Fellow is provided with funding to attend the AMSSM Research Workshop for Sports Medicine Fellows in July/August. The fellowship also provides CME funding to allow the fellow to attend one of the national annual sports medicine conferences hosted by either ACSM or AMSSM, and additional funding to support research presentations at the national level.
