Pharmacy Postgraduate Year Two Critical Care Residency Program

St. Vincent’s Postgraduate Year Two (PGY2) Critical Care Pharmacy Residency Program is designed to develop a well-rounded independent critical care practitioner able to provide high-level clinical services in a variety of ICU settings. The resident will develop skills in managing drug therapy for patients with multiple disease states in the critical care setting, educating students, residents, and other healthcare professionals, and conducting clinical research. The resident will also gain experiences in therapeutic policy development in the critical care environment. At the residency completion, graduates exit equipped to be fully integrated members of the interdisciplinary critical care team, able to make complex medication recommendations in the acute environment for the critically ill patient population.  In addition, graduates excel in teaching other healthcare professionals and exercising leadership for critical care practice in the health system.

PGY2 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in advanced or specialized practice.  PGY2 residencies provide residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care that improves medication therapy.  Residents who successfully complete an accredited PGY2 pharmacy residency should possess competencies that qualify them for clinical pharmacist and/or faculty positions and position them to be eligible for attainment of board certification in the specialized practice area (where board certification for the practice area exists).

The residency program is customized for each resident, based on their individual goals, interests, and experience. Each resident is required to complete core rotations essential to the critical care pharmacy practitioner. A variety of elective rotations are available, allowing residents to pursue their professional goals. Upon successful completion of the residency program, residents will receive a certificate of completion.
