The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program is designed to develop advanced knowledge and skills for pharmacy clinicians to practice independently and to excel in clinical service, teaching, and research in the acute care setting.

Learning Experiences

The rotation schedule for the 12-month PGY1 Residency Program includes:

  • Orientation (4 week duration)
  • Six Required Rotations (4 week duration each)
  • Elective Rotations (20 weeks)
  • Research Block (2 week duration)
  • ASHP Mid-Year Clinical Meeting (1 week)
  • Year End Wrap-Up Block (1 week)

*Population Health and Transitions of Care are available at our St. Vincent's Southside campus.  Ambulatory Care, Pediatrics, and Psychiatry are potential electives at other local healthcare facilities based on availability. The resident can take one rotation outside St. Vincent's Riverside.

**The number and length of electives can be varied as part of the residency development plan for each resident. The total elective time is 20 weeks. Other elective learning experiences may be developed based on resident interest and preceptor availability.

Additional Learning Opportunities

  • Complete a research project with results which includes:
    • Present at Florida Residency Conference (FRC) and Ascension Virtual Residency Conference (VRC)
    • Compose a written manuscript suitable for publication
    • Submit either the manuscript for publication or an abstract for a poster presentation at a state or national meeting
  • Compile and present a medication use evaluation (MUE) at ASHP Midyear Meeting
  • Complete a drug class review, drug monograph, or order set review
  • Compose a newsletter or bulletin to healthcare providers
  • Present a Pharmacy Grand Rounds Presentation approved for 1 hour continuing education
  • Present a Pharmacy Technician Program approved for continuing education
  • Obtain ACLS certification
  • Participate in ACLS skills building training sessions
  • Respond to Medical Emergency Codes
  • Actively participate in and present three Resident Interactive Teaching Experiences, weekly resident meetings (one journal club, one critical literature evaluation, and one patient case presentation)
  • Teach cardiopulmonary rehabilitation classes
  • Precept and mentor pharmacy students
  • Complete community service projects: one project per quarter
  • Attend ASHP Midyear Meeting and Florida Residency Conference
  • Teaching certificate through the University of Florida (optional)

Staffing Requirements 

Every third weekend
One evening a week
One major and two minor holiday

Staffing shifts are a combination of central and clinical assignments.
