Program Description

The Emergency Department at Ascension Sacred Heart Pensacola is a high-acuity, multidisciplinary practice environment that provides comprehensive emergency care to patients across Northwest Florida, South Alabama, and neighboring Gulf Coast communities. Emergency services include a 43-bed main Emergency Department at the Pensacola campus and four freestanding Emergency Departments throughout the region, each with 12+ treatment beds, creating a broad and diverse emergency medicine network.

The Pensacola campus is designated as a Level I Adult and Pediatric Trauma Center and a Comprehensive Stroke Center, serving as the regional referral center for critically ill and injured patients. The Emergency Department cares for approximately 61,000 patients annually, with a high-acuity patient population requiring advanced resuscitation, trauma management, toxicology consultation, emergency cardiovascular care, neurologic emergencies, and pediatric critical care. Residents participate in the care of patients across the full spectrum of emergency medicine while collaborating closely with physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, respiratory therapists, and consulting specialists.

As the flagship hospital for the region, Ascension Sacred Heart Pensacola offers direct access to nationally recognized specialty services, including the Regional Heart and Vascular Institute, Cancer Center, Kidney Transplant Program, Studer Family Children's Hospital, and inpatient rehabilitation services. These resources provide pharmacy residents with exposure to complex disease states and multidisciplinary management across a wide variety of patient populations.

The institution maintains a strong commitment to academic medicine and interprofessional education. Pharmacy residents train alongside learners from multiple disciplines, including the Florida State University College of Medicine residency programs in emergency medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, and pediatrics. The recently established Emergency Medicine Residency, which welcomes 15 medical residents annually, further enhances the collaborative learning environment and provides unique opportunities for interdisciplinary education, bedside teaching, simulation, and emergency response.
