Vascular Surgery Fellowship

Ascension Illinois offers a traditional two-year fellowship training program in vascular surgery that is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The program accommodates a total of two fellows — one at the PGY6 and one at the PGY7 level — and is dedicated to preparing them for a fulfilling career in the evaluation and treatment of patients with vascular disease.

Fellows will gain both the technical skills and clinical acumen to understand all forms of arterial, venous and lymphatic disease. Our program serves a diverse community of patients with a broad spectrum of vascular issues. Additionally, fellows are expected to gain skills in research and leadership to become excellent clinical and academic vascular surgeons.

Welcome From The Director

Thank you for your interest in the Ascension Illinois vascular surgery fellowship. We are proud to offer applicants have completed five years of general surgical training an ACGME-accredited independent fellowship. We offer a wide array of both open and endovascular training in various clinical settings. Our varied operative experience serves as a tertiary referral center for complex open and endovascular procedures.

The fellowship itself is extremely busy; fellows are able to reach ACGME-defined category minimums by the end of their first year of training. Our training exposure is divided into three different pods throughout Chicago and the greater Chicagoland area. Our service gives fellows the opportunity for independent decision-making and critical management of patients, as well as exposure to complex and routine vascular and endovascular procedures. Fellows will also be exposed to vascular lab and outpatient patient care.

With a total of nine faculty members throughout our clinical training sites, we are excited to teach the next generation of vascular surgeons in any clinical scope of practice they choose — academic or private practice. Our program highlights include:

  • Large volume of open aortic surgery and lower-extremity bypass surgery
  • Complex endovascular surgery performed in three hybrid Operating Rooms
  • Broad clinical practice encompassing all aspects of vascular surgery including cerebrovascular, aortic, peripheral vascular, dialysis access, wound care, venous disease and vascular medicine
  • Opportunities for clinical research and involvement in clinical trials
  • Protected time to attend various vascular conferences throughout the nation
  • An enriching weekly didactic conference encompassing journal club, lectures from faculty and interesting case conferences
  • Chicago is an amazing city with breathtaking architecture, world-class dining with 20+ Michelin star restaurants and vibrant local neighborhoods (a treat for families and single people alike)

If you are looking for a bustling clinical program with a broad scope of practice, we invite you to apply to our program for advanced vascular training.
