Family Medicine Residency

Aneesh Tyle, MD, AAHIVS

Welcome from the director

Thank you for your interest in the Ascension St. Joseph Chicago Family Medicine Residency Program. Located in the heart of Chicago, our program combines the strengths of a community hospital with the educational opportunities of an academic environment. Founded in 1868, St. Joseph is one of the city’s oldest hospitals, and our Family Medicine Residency—established in 1972—is among the longest-standing programs in the country. For more than 50 years, we have been committed to training compassionate, adaptable, and highly skilled family physicians prepared to care for diverse communities.

Our residents train in a dynamic urban setting and care for patients with a wide range of medical conditions and cultural backgrounds. In the hospital, residents work closely with dedicated family medicine faculty, hospitalists, and residents in Internal Medicine, Surgery, and Podiatry. Residents also learn from a strong network of specialists who are deeply invested in resident education and mentorship.

Our primary outpatient training site, the Seton Family Health Center, is a cornerstone of the residency experience. The clinic serves a diverse and loyal patient population, many of whom have longstanding relationships with our program. Residents develop continuity with patients across the full spectrum of care — pediatrics, adult medicine, and geriatrics — while gaining experience caring for individuals from a wide range of socioeconomic backgrounds and insurance types. This experience prepares our graduates for truly full-scope family medicine practice.

Our residents are also educators. They play an active role in teaching medical students and fellow residents while developing their own skills as communicators, advocates, and leaders in patient care.

At St. Joseph, our residents and faculty bring diverse experiences, interests, and passions that shape a collaborative and supportive learning environment. We continuously refine our curriculum to meet the evolving needs of our residents and the community we serve.

Our program has maintained continuous accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), and our residents have achieved a 100% pass rate on the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) certification exam for over a decade.

Most importantly, our program is defined by its people. Our residents are leaders, scholars, and innovators who support one another and create a positive learning environment. St. Joseph truly feels like a family, and it is a place where we enjoy coming to work each day.

We invite you to learn more about our program and connect with our team—we would be delighted to hear from you.

Sincerely,

Aneesh Tyle, MD, AAHIVS

Location, location, location

There are few cities in the world like Chicago, and no neighborhood quite like Lincoln Park. Tucked along Lake Michigan just north of the Loop (the downtown area), Lincoln Park represents the best of the city. Quiet residential streets lined with historic brownstones are just around the corner from some of the city's most popular restaurants, theaters, bars and clubs.

Along the eastern edge of the neighborhood is the park itself, a stretch of bike trails, nature preserves, golf ranges and softball fields that connect the city to its marvelous lakefront beaches.

In the middle of it all stands Ascension Saint Joseph - Chicago — serving the Lincoln Park/Lakeview community for over 135 years. Magnificent Lake Michigan and Belmont Harbor are in Ascension Saint Joseph - Chicago's "front yard." Many of our residents live within walking distance of the hospital — we are in the perfect location to take advantage of all of the shopping, dining, cultural and outdoor recreational opportunities that our great city has to offer!

Patient population

At Ascension Medical Group Illinois Primary Care Chicago, every clinic day feels like Chicago walking through the front door. Residents care for longtime neighborhood families, new parents, young professionals, older adults, recent immigrants, and patients whose stories are shaped by culture, language, work, family, and community.

That variety keeps training meaningful and real. Over three years, residents build their own patient panels, grow with their patients, and learn the kind of family medicine where one listens well, adapts care to real life, and become the doctor patients trust by name.

Autonomy

Ascension Medical Group Illinois Primary Care Chicago is an outpatient training experience like no other. You'll follow your own panel of families for three years. You might deliver their babies, admit their parents to nursing homes and, if necessary, assist in your patients' surgeries. If they are seriously ill, you'll admit them to the inpatient family medicine residency team at Ascension Saint Joseph - Chicago where you can be involved in their care. These patients think of you as "their doctor" and they will ask for you by name when they make an appointment.

Far from a "resident clinic," Seton functions like an 18-doctor group practice whose members cover for one another on weekends and for vacations. Overseeing your outpatient training are our faculty preceptors, who offer management suggestions in the peer-based, collegial atmosphere of the Doctor's Library. The library is the workspace shared by the core faculty and residents alike and encourages a collaborative learning environment. Established in 1980, Ascension Medical Group Illinois Primary Care Chicago remains a longstanding pillar of the Lincoln Park community.

Life as a resident

Our residents are the heart of the Ascension Saint Joseph - Chicago Family Medicine Residency Program. And once you have the opportunity to meet them, you will certainly see why. Our program truly feels like family.

Each June, we are delighted to welcome a class of six new interns, with a total of 18 residents in the program. Each resident is assigned a dedicated faculty advisor to help mentor and guide him or her throughout their three years of training and beyond.

Giving back to our community

Residents and faculty make time to give back to the community, and in Chicago, there are always opportunities. Together, we participate in regular monthly volunteer service at CommunityHealth, originally founded in 1993 by Dr. Serafino Garello, then-chairman of The Department of Medicine at Ascension Saint Joseph - Chicago. CommunityHealth is dedicated to serving the uninsured and underinsured in Chicago and surrounding communities and is now the largest volunteer-based free medical facility in the nation.

Residents and faculty volunteer for the annual WGN Back to School Fair, various citywide sporting events and as providers on the medical team servicing the homeless population of Chicago.

A family that plays together…

We work very closely with our medical staff, our medical assistants, nurses and staff to make our lives easier in-clinic and more fun outside of clinic! Even as residents, we make sure to take time to celebrate the holidays with our residency family.

Life outside the hospital

Residency is demanding, but our program believes that community matters. Our residents make time to connect outside of clinical work through wellness events, group meals, social outings, and the occasional potluck. Monthly intern lunches with faculty and shared meals on busy rotations help create a culture where residents feel supported.

And then there is Chicago. From lakefront runs and neighborhood coffee shops to world-class museums, restaurants, sports, music, and architecture, the city gives residents plenty of ways to recharge. Whether you are here for three years or decide to stay longer, Chicago quickly becomes part of the training experience.
