Dr. Andrew Rivard graduated with honors from the University of Minnesota with a BA in cellular and integrative human physiology in 2000, this was followed by a MD also at UMN. Four years of cardiac surgical research culminated in a Master's degree also in human physiology. Dr. Rivard completed radiology residency at the top ranked University of Florida. In 2010, Dr. Rivard established the first adult and pediatric cardiac imaging and fellowship program in the State of Mississippi at UMMC, serving a ~2M population. Dr. Rivard has written more than 40 peer-reviewed publications with a specific focus on cardiac transplantation, cardiac physiology, and imaging from bench research to large clinical multicenter trials.
Since joining the Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi in 2015 as one of the pioneering group of 165 physicians who opened the first hospital of size and complexity in the Middle East, Dr. Rivard developed a comprehensive cardiac imaging program designed for the optimal patient experience and diagnostic service excellence serving the UAE and Gulf regions, a "Patient's First" philosophy. The program grew 20% annually to a volume of >400 CMR and >2500 cardiac CT exams serving a catchment population of ~1M. The cardiac imaging practice includes imaging for structural, ischemic, and adult congenital heart disease, as well as advanced post processing, and 3D printing. In 2020, Dr. Rivard was appointed Clinical Professor of Radiology at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University.
As a developing leader, Dr. Rivard has taken an active interest in business networking and is a long-time member of the American Heart Association, the North American Society for Cardiac Imaging, the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation and is board certified by the American College of Radiology, Society for Cardiac Computed Tomography, and the Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance. Dr. Rivard is a former chapter president of the Mississippi Radiological Society and was responsible for modernizing the chapter organization, operations, and website.
Dr. Rivard is passionate about interdisciplinary research with the heart, specifically heart valves, heart transplantation, and takes a specific interest in donor heart preservation. Dr. Rivard enjoys making new connections and developing innovations in experimental surgery, medical devices, and cardiac imaging. Prior to radiology training in 2002, Dr. Rivard founded Hibernicor which has taken him on an R&D journey to develop a lightweight portable donor hypothermic heart preservation device.
