Third Year Fellows

Emily Mathis, DO, Chief Fellow

IM Residency: Ascension St. Vincent, Indianapolis
Medical School: Marian College of Osteopathic Medicine, IN
Undergraduate: University of Southern Indiana

I completed both my medical school and internal medicine training here in Indianapolis. Through that, I was fortunate enough to work with several fellows and attendings who are part of this fellowship. From day one, it was obvious there is a universal commitment to teaching demonstrated by all members of this program. I feel challenged here to grow and learn while also having a healthy work-life balance. Aside from the quality education, the staff want their fellows to succeed in whatever career path they choose and offer guidance and support to make this possible.  As a current fellow and previous resident, I have always felt the attendings here are truly invested in my future as a cardiologist. Indianapolis is additionally an amazing area to live and raise a family. Outside of work, I like to spend time with my husband and dogs outdoors.

Jonathan C. McCollum, MD

IM Residency: Indiana University School of Medicine, Indianapolis
Medical School: University of Alabama School of Medicine , AL
Undergraduate: Troy University, AL

During my time in Indianapolis, I heard many patients and locals talk about Ascension St. Vincent and the excellent cardiac care they provided. Another reason I sought out this fellowship was the smaller size of the program. It allows you to connect with staff on both a professional and personal level. The program has a close-knit family feel where there are no strangers. I think this makes it easier for the faculty to develop great clinical cardiologists while building toward a fellow’s future preferences. I have never been at a training program that emphasizes support for education and wellness with as much intent. There is a uniform understanding from faculty that fellows are learners not labor. The program wants you to be well rested when you come to work so you have the mental bandwidth and passion you need to be a great cardiologist. Initially I came to Indianapolis from Alabama for residency. Regarding location, I always say Indianapolis is an easy place to live. There is always something going on whether that’s a festival, concert, or sporting event. Our campus is in the city of Carmel which is consistently rated as one of the top cities in America. As fellows we have frequent socials to take advantage of all the activities in or around the city. Outside of cardiology, my wife and I can be found watching college football and playing with our French Bulldogs at any given moment.

Second Year Fellows

Sapan Bhuta, MD

IM Residency: University of Toledo
Medical School: University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, OH
Undergraduate: The Ohio State University, Fisher College of Business
I grew up in Columbus, Ohio, and went on to study finance at The Ohio State University, medicine at University of Cincinnati, completed internal medicine residency at University of Toledo, and after residency completed a research year focused on electrophysiology at The Ohio State University. When interviewing for fellowships, I was looking for a place that served as a tertiary care referral center for the most complex pathology in a wide catchment area, and had high volumes in all aspects of cardiology including imaging, interventional, structural, electrophysiology, advanced heart failure therapies, and transplant. This program has been incredible in terms of volume, mentorship, clinical training, and getting fellows involved in procedures/imaging. Additionally, we are fortunate to work with world renowned experts in all the subspecialties. Indianapolis has a nice midwestern vibe with friendly people, lots of outdoor activities, and great food. In my free time, I like to explore the Monon Trail and the food scene in Indy.

Derek Mounsey, DO

IM Residency: Ascension St. Vincent, Indianapolis

Medical School:
University of Pikeville-KY College of Osteopathic Medicine

Masters of Health Administration: Indiana University, Indianapolis

Undergraduate: Depauw University, IN

I was born and raised a Hoosier. I have spent most of my education and training here, with the exception of a short stint down in the Bluegrass state at the University of Pikeville for medical school. Even prior to my first day of medical school, I have always dreamed of becoming a St. Vincent-trained Cardiologist. A family member had been cared for at the Heart Center, and I will never forget the comprehensive and compassionate care we received from that doctor, along with the nurses and support staff. I was fortunate enough to train here for my Internal Medicine Residency, and had an inside look at the tremendous role that the Cardiology department and fellows play in providing outstanding care to some of the most complex cardiac patients in the region. On a more personal level, it is surreal to have the opportunity to spend one-on-one time learning from some of the most renowned and accomplished cardiologists in the country. Last but not least, the emphasis this program places on becoming an outstanding patient-focused clinician is very important to me.

Outside of work, I am married to my high school sweetheart Layne, who works as an epidemiologist at the Indiana State Health Department. We have a dachshund/lab mix named Tilly and are expecting a little girl in October 2023! I enjoy golfing, grilling, and anything that involves power tools!

First Year Fellows

Eric Bain, MD

IM Residency: Indiana University School of Medicine, IN
Medical School: Indiana University School of Medicine, IN
Undergraduate: Purdue University, IN
I am delighted to start expanding my cardiac expertise with a fellowship at St. Vincent Hospital. As a native to Indiana raised in the suburbs of Indianapolis and a Purdue alumni, I would regularly hear of the clinical excellence and success of the Care Group. This was solidified during my medical school and residency training during which I interacted with many of the nationally recognized staff during conferences and away rotations. The staff are forging scientific advancements in multiple subspecialties including electrophysiology, interventional, and advanced heart failure. At a site with such large volumes and critically ill patients, I knew the training would form a solid well rounded cardiology foundation. Beyond the clinical excellence, I have found the most notable quality to be the staff’s comradery and authenticity towards each other and the trainees. When not daydreaming about the heart, I spend my time with my wife and children exploring national parks, playing chess, reading, and running.

Blaine Massey, DO

IM Residency: Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at UNLV, NV
Medical School: Western University of Health Science College of Medicine, Lebanon, OR
Undergraduate: Whitworth University, WA
I was raised in Boise, ID and went to undergrad at Whitworth University in Spokane, WA. I attended medical school at Western University of Health Sciences in Lebanon, OR, and completed my internal medicine residency at the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at UNLV. A few of the reasons I chose Ascension St. Vincent for fellowship include the phenomenal education and devoted faculty, supportive learning environment, and advanced fellowships. I am particularly impressed by the breadth of training experiences, acuity of cases, and diversity of pathology. Ascension St. Vincent cardiology fellowship is a top tier program with training by leaders in the field. In addition, Indianapolis is a wonderful place to live and raise a family. Outside of work, I enjoy fishing, mountain biking, cycling, ceramics, exercising, and spending time with my wife and child.

Andrew Pannabecker, MD

IM Residency: UT Houston Health and Science Center, TX
Medical School: Indiana University School of Medicine, IN
Undergraduate: Bethel College, IN
After being raised in Elkhart, IN, I attended Bethel College for my undergraduate education prior to completing medical school at Indiana University School of Medicine. After Completing residency, in Houston, TX, I returned to Indiana and have worked as a cardiac nocturnist at St Vincent here in Indianapolis. During that time I have had ongoing interaction with both the cardiology group and the fellowship program. I have been fortunate to continue my training at St Vincent which consists of a truly unique combination of education and clinical exposure. While my work experience has consisted of managing the acute components of cardiac medicine, I am looking forward to exploring all of the aspects of cardiology. In my free time I enjoy hiking with my dogs and wife, mountain biking, downhill skiing, and photographing the great outdoors.
