Brief Program Overview

Ascension St. Vincent Indianapolis (Southern Region) Internal Medicine Residency is an academic program sponsored by Ascension St. Vincent, the largest Catholic Hospital System in the United States, with medical students from both Marian University and Indiana University. It serves a large catchment area including southwest Indiana, northern Kentucky, and southeast Illinois. Ours is an urban program amid a rural region, with over six hundred faculty physicians.

Our educational mission is to train physicians to care for medically complex and vulnerable patients in rural and urban environments. To facilitate that mission, our residents have intense inpatient and outpatient clinical experiences, which far exceed the minimum requirements, as well as longitudinal training in quality, safety, operational excellence, and procedural competence to allow them to succeed in resource poor rural health care environments. All our residents are required to lead annual scholarly projects in at least one of the key areas of competency necessary for a career in rural health care. Our program is unique in that the Program Director has decades of prior GME experience and the Associate Program Directors each have many years of GME experience and were integral to the ACGME Educational Innovation Project.
