Curriculum
The Ascension Saint Francis Transitional Year Residency's curriculum consists of 13 four-week rotation blocks. The following rotations are required:
- Internal Medicine: 6 blocks (24 weeks)
- Surgery-Trauma: 1 block (4 weeks)
- Emergency Medicine: 1 block (4 weeks)
- Ambulatory Primary Care: 1 block (4 weeks)
Two of the remaining four blocks are deemed medicine “selectives.” Residents in the program must choose two subspecialty areas in medicine or a critical care unit rotation to satisfy this requirement.
Selective options:
- Cardiology
- Pulmonology
- Hematology–Oncology
- Rheumatology
- Dermatology
- Gastroenterology
- Medicine ICU
- Infectious Disease
Two blocks are elective. Choices include above medical subspecialties plus the following:
- Anesthesiology*
- Diagnostic Radiology
- Rheumatology
- Dermatology
- Neurology
(*rotations in departments without sponsored or affiliated residency programs) Curricula are individualized for each resident based on choice of future specialty and individual preference. Certain advanced specialties have requirements for the clinical base year (anesthesiology, dermatology, neurology, among others). Curriculum planning prioritizes those needs.
