Ascension Saint Francis
Radiology Residency
Radiology residents at Ascension Saint Francis experience a collegial environment with a focus on learning and patient care. Residents encourage each other to learn on a daily basis. While they do enjoy challenging each other, they are quick to lend assistance to one another.
We provide a hands-on approach to learning radiology. One-on-one readouts are done to provide accelerated learning in all imaging modalities. Residents also experience hands-on teaching in fluoroscopy and interventional procedures. Through exposure during various rotations, residents develop interests in all subspecialties of radiology.
Why choose us?
The Ascension Saint Francis Radiology Residency is a supportive environment that will foster your training through great faculty and exposure to a variety of pathology, all while providing an enjoyable experience.
We are a Level 1 Trauma Center in Evanston, Illinois, a suburb just north of Chicago. Our program takes a "hands-on" approach to training; faculty devote extensive one-on-one time with residents throughout the workday. While we do encourage professional development, we also value a healthy work-life balance.
We celebrate a diverse group of residents and faculty. The hospital and locale attracts trainees and faculty from both local and national institutions. Our recruitment of populations underrepresented in radiology also speaks to our commitment to diversity, including minority populations and women. We value the different perspectives and improvement in our patient care that such diversity affords us.State-of-the-art technology
Ascension Illinois radiology facilities use state-of-the-art technology for image acquisition. For example, at Ascension Saint Francis, two AW GE Workstations are available for 3-D volumetric reformatting and post-processing. In addition, each PACS station can operate as a 3-D workstation via a remote server. All studies are read off of PACS monitors and dictated using Nuance voice dictation. EPIC EMR is used throughout the hospital. State-of-the-art BARCO monitors are also available for use by residents.
Department equipment:
- GE Lightspeed VCT 64 CT scanner
- GE Discovery CT750 HD scanner
- GE 3T Signa MRI
- Nuclear Medicine Siemens eCams
- GE PET/CT
- GE Logiq Ultrasound Machine
- Automated Breast Ultrasound Machine
Diverse learning environments
Our residency is mainly situated at Ascension Saint Francis. Residents learn interventional radiology, ER radiology, body imaging, and take call at this location. Evanston is at once urban and suburban, hugging the shore of Lake Michigan and only 25 minutes from downtown Chicago.
Other locations include:Ascension Saint Joseph - Chicago (L) — Where residents learn body and musculoskeletal imaging. Situated along the lakefront trail in Lincoln Park, this location allows easy access to the city and for running and biking.
Ascension Resurrection (R) — Where residents learn neuroradiology. This large teaching hospital is among the best in Chicago for neuroscience and stroke care, and is our in-network referral center for stroke cases. Located on the northwest side of Chicago, its nearby parks and shopping centers offer a mix of activities in a more suburban environment.Comprehensive educational resources
The Ascension Saint Francis Radiology Residency maintains a library in the department containing journals, textbooks and DVDs as well as syllabi from the ACR and other board preparation references.
We also offer:
- Online subscriptions to the ACR teaching file and the ACR "All Access Pass," as well as STATDX, Rad Primer and e-Anatomy
- Electronic texts through Stafref, AccessMedicine, and Ovid Books covering a range of disciplines (provided by the medical library at Ascension Saint Francis)
- More than 1,000 full-text journals accessible through the hospital intranet, with search engines provided by Ebscohost, Ovid and PubMed for both remote and in-house searches
- DynaMed and MD database
Experience in all aspects of radiology
Diverse curriculum & rotations
Our residents attend a variety of rotations at Ascension Saint Francis and at three other Ascension Illinois hospitals in Chicago. Each site has its own focus in terms of diagnostic imaging and procedures. This creates a hybrid academic experience with community-based practice workflow exposure. We believe that this experience makes our residents ready for both the rigor of further academic endeavors, and for work in private practice.
Our curriculum allows our residents to pursue endeavors both in and outside of radiology. Many are involved in research projects in radiology. Others take on business opportunities and startups outside the field. The flexibility afforded to our residents in their schedule allows these pursuits throughout their residency.

Ample stipends & time off for conferences
