How to Apply

how to apply saint mary

We accept applications only through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Your medical school dean's office or the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) will provide additional information about how you can access the process.

Faculty members review applications daily beginning early in September, when ERAS officially opens. If your application meets the program's criteria, the program coordinator will invite you via electronic mail to schedule an interview. We interview on Tuesdays from mid-October through the end of January.

During your visit, we try to give you a flavor of the program by having you meet residents and faculty. It is our goal not only to get to know you, but to give you the chance to know us; we regard "fit" as a shared goal. We encourage in-person tours for those who want a less structured, more in-depth exposure to our program.

Additional information for the applicant:

  • All applicants must be registered with the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).
  • Applications must be submitted through the ERAS.
  • We do not sponsor H visas. We will consider sponsoring J visas with compelling applications, especially if the candidate can demonstrate ties to the community.
  • United States medical system experience is required, including familiarity with pharmaceutical and insurance systems.
  • Three individual letters of recommendation are required. These should be from physicians who know your professional skills, not just know you personally.
  • At least one letter of recommendation should be from a family physician (two or more highly encouraged).
  • Applicants with a combined total of more than two failures on Steps I and II of the USMLE exam are less likely to be considered for our program.
  • All documents must have certified translations if not in English.
  • Graduation from medical school within the last three years.
  • If out of medical school more than a year, applicants must demonstrate efforts to keep up with the changes in medicine.
  • Applicants who are ECFMG certified at time of application are more likely to be considered for an interview.
  • All applications must be received by December 1.
  • CS exam must be passed.
