Important CME Resources for Physicians
The following requirements are established by the Michigan Licensing and Regulatory Affairs Department (LARA). (Requirements below were accurate at the time of this post)
Medical Doctors (M.D.)
- 150 hours of continuing education per 3-year license cycle of which 75 hours of the required 150 hours must be earned in courses designated as Category 1 programs.
- 1 hour in medical ethics education (required each 3-year license cycle)
- 3 hours in pain and symptom management education of which at least 1 of the 3 hours must include controlled substance prescribing. (required each 3-year license cycle)
- NEW, effective 9/1/2019: 1 training in opioids and controlled substances (one-time requirement for prescribers and dispensers of controlled substances)
- NEW, Effective 12/6/2021: 1 training on human trafficking (one-time requirement)
- NEW, Effective 6/1/2022: 2 hours of Implicit bias training within the 5 years immediately preceding, to address racial disparities
Osteopathic Doctors (D.O.)
- 150 hours of continuing education per 3-year license cycle of which 60 hours of the required 150 hours must be earned in courses designated as Category 1 programs.
- 1 hour in medical ethics education (required each 3-year license cycle)
- 3 hours in pain and symptom management education of which at least 1 of the 3 hours must include controlled substance prescribing. (required each 3-year license cycle)
- NEW, effective 2022 Renewal cycle: 1 training in opioids and controlled substances (one-time requirement for prescribers and dispensers of controlled substances)
- NEW, Effective 12/6/2021: 1 training on human trafficking (one-time requirement)
