Matthew J. Glogoza, MD, Chief Fellow

IM Residency: Abbott Northwestern Hospital, MN
Medical School: University of North Dakota
Undergraduate: Concordia College, MN
I am originally from Fargo, North Dakota. I did my internal medicine training in Minneapolis, so when looking for cardiology programs in the Midwest, St. Vincent-Indianapolis was a top choice because of its highly reputable and respected fellowship. I was searching for a place that had high levels of all aspects of cardiology including electrophysiology, interventional, heart failure, and transplant. I wanted to learn from the leaders in those fields which made St. Vincent the easy choice of place to go. Since being here the staff has been incredible to work with, they are dedicated to teaching and go out of their way to ensure that we get the best education possible and achieve all of our career goals.  Not only do they support our cardiology careers, but they support us outside of work, encouraging us to be well-rounded individuals with an appropriate level of work-life balance. Outside of work, my wife and I love to hang out with our 2 dogs, Stark and Rita. I love being outdoors including downhill skiing and training for marathons, which I ran my first marathon at the Indianapolis Monumental during my first-year fellowship. I love cooking and using my Big Green Egg for barbeque as much as possible! St. Vincent has been a fantastic place to learn and work, and I am so fortunate to be able to learn and continue my career here.

Alexander C. Slaten, DO

IM Residency: Ascension St. Vincent, Indianapolis
Medical School: Marian College of Osteopathic Medicine, IN
Undergraduate: Purdue University, IN
Born and raised in Fort Wayne, Indiana, I then attended Purdue University for my undergraduate degree prior to moving to the Indianapolis area to obtain my medical education. I was exposed to cardiology at St. Vincent early in my training and knew immediately this is where I aspired to complete my fellowship. St. Vincent offers comprehensive training in a wide variety of pathologies with a diverse patient population at a high level of acuity. The program also offers exposure and first-hand experience in the various subspecialties of electrophysiology, interventional, advanced heart failure & transplant cardiology. The staff is devoted and dedicated to the education and growth of individual fellows, as well as the success of the fellowship as a whole. Whether one is pursuing non-invasive cardiology, or other invasive areas of the field, he or she will receive unmeasurable support to excel. Additionally, this program acknowledges the importance of work-life balance allowing me to enjoy time doing the things I enjoy such as hiking, fishing, athletics, reading, or spending time with my wife and dog.

Second Year Fellows

Emily Mathis, DO

IM Residency: Ascension St. Vincent, Indianapolis
Medical School: Marian College of Osteopathic Medicine, IN
Undergraduate: University of Southern Indiana

I completed both my medical school and internal medicine training here in Indianapolis. Through that, I was fortunate enough to work with several fellows and attendings who are part of this fellowship. From day one, it was obvious there is a universal commitment to teaching demonstrated by all members of this program. I feel challenged here to grow and learn while also having a healthy work-life balance. Aside from the quality education, the staff want their fellows to succeed in whatever career path they choose and offer guidance and support to make this possible.  As a current fellow and previous resident, I have always felt the attendings here are truly invested in my future as a cardiologist. Indianapolis is additionally an amazing area to live and raise a family. Outside of work, I like to spend time with my husband and dogs outdoors.

Jonathan C. McCollum, MD

IM Residency: Indiana University School of Medicine, Indianapolis
Medical School: University of Alabama School of Medicine , AL
Undergraduate: Troy University, AL

During my time in Indianapolis, I heard many patients and locals talk about Ascension St. Vincent and the excellent cardiac care they provided. Another reason I sought out this fellowship was the smaller size of the program. It allows you to connect with staff on both a professional and personal level. The program has a close-knit family feel where there are no strangers. I think this makes it easier for the faculty to develop great clinical cardiologists while building toward a fellow’s future preferences. I have never been at a training program that emphasizes support for education and wellness with as much intent. There is a uniform understanding from faculty that fellows are learners not labor. The program wants you to be well rested when you come to work so you have the mental bandwidth and passion you need to be a great cardiologist. Initially I came to Indianapolis from Alabama for residency. Regarding location, I always say Indianapolis is an easy place to live. There is always something going on whether that’s a festival, concert, or sporting event. Our campus is in the city of Carmel which is consistently rated as one of the top cities in America. As fellows we have frequent socials to take advantage of all the activities in or around the city. Outside of cardiology, my wife and I can be found watching college football and playing with our French Bulldogs at any given moment.

First Year Fellows

Sapan Bhuta, MD

IM Residency: University of Toledo
Medical School: University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, OH
Undergraduate: The Ohio State University, Fisher College of Business
I grew up in Columbus, Ohio, and went on to study finance at The Ohio State University, medicine at University of Cincinnati, completed internal medicine residency at University of Toledo, and after residency completed a research year focused on electrophysiology at The Ohio State University. When interviewing for fellowships, I was looking for a place that served as a tertiary care referral center for the most complex pathology in a wide catchment area, and had high volumes in all aspects of cardiology including imaging, interventional, structural, electrophysiology, advanced heart failure therapies, and transplant. This program has been incredible in terms of volume, mentorship, clinical training, and getting fellows involved in procedures/imaging. Additionally, we are fortunate to work with world renowned experts in all the subspecialties. Indianapolis has a nice midwestern vibe with friendly people, lots of outdoor activities, and great food. In my free time, I like to explore the Monon Trail and the food scene in Indy.

Derek Mounsey, DO

IM Residency: Ascension St. Vincent, Indianapolis

Medical School:
University of Pikeville-KY College of Osteopathic Medicine

Masters of Health Administration: Indiana University, Indianapolis

Undergraduate: Depauw University, IN

I was born and raised a Hoosier. I have spent most of my education and training here, with the exception of a short stint down in the Bluegrass state at the University of Pikeville for medical school. Even prior to my first day of medical school, I have always dreamed of becoming a St. Vincent-trained Cardiologist. A family member had been cared for at the Heart Center, and I will never forget the comprehensive and compassionate care we received from that doctor, along with the nurses and support staff. I was fortunate enough to train here for my Internal Medicine Residency, and had an inside look at the tremendous role that the Cardiology department and fellows play in providing outstanding care to some of the most complex cardiac patients in the region. On a more personal level, it is surreal to have the opportunity to spend one-on-one time learning from some of the most renowned and accomplished cardiologists in the country. Last but not least, the emphasis this program places on becoming an outstanding patient-focused clinician is very important to me.

Outside of work, I am married to my high school sweetheart Layne, who works as an epidemiologist at the Indiana State Health Department. We have a dachshund/lab mix named Tilly and are expecting a little girl in October 2023! I enjoy golfing, grilling, and anything that involves power tools!
