Curriculum
The postdoctoral position focuses on clinical pediatric neuropsychology, and the fellow will work with four pediatric neuropsychologists. The pediatric neuropsychology service specializes in assessment, diagnosis and treatment planning for children under the age of 18 who are presenting with a broad base of neurological, psychiatric, medical and/or learning disorders. The pediatric neuropsychologists routinely interface with the family, school and other treatment providers.
The postdoctoral training offers extensive experience with concussion and traumatic brain injury (TBI), autism spectrum disorders and attention and learning disorders. Other common referral questions include issues related to late effects of prematurity, late effects of stroke, epilepsy, genetic disorders, unclear neuropsychiatric disorders and in-utero exposure to teratogens. The postdoctoral resident will gain experience attending IEP meetings, working with a special education team and learning how to work in a multidisciplinary team environment.
Approximately 80% of the post-doctoral resident’s time will be spent in clinical activities; the other 20% is in research and educational activities. Our training program includes several practicum students, so there are opportunities to develop supervision skills. We have regular didactic seminars (i.e., journal club, neuroanatomy series, case presentations/fact findings, neuropsychology and related topics), as well as other didactics offered through our Autism and Developmental Disorders Resource Center, and Ascension Alexian Brothers Behavioral Health Hospital.
The ultimate goal of the program is to train neuropsychologists according to the guidelines outlined by the Houston Conference on Specialty Education and Training in Clinical Neuropsychology.
